Wireline Lateral Drilling System

In today’s oil and gas industry, economically maximizing the production of hydrocarbons from existing wells is becoming increasingly important. After extended periods of production, many oil and gas wells suffer from a skin effect whereby further production is hindered by near wellbore formation damage effectively blocking the path from the reservoir to the wellbore. Further, wells may suffer increasing water cut or become watered out, stranding pools of unproduced hydrocarbons.

During the life of a production well, work overs may be undertaken to alleviate these skin effects. Traditional methods of work over include acid stimulation, re-perforation and re-completions. Often a sidetrack is the only effective way to increase production and reserve recovery but may be prohibitively expensive.
 
Wireline Drilling Technologies has patented and developed a revolutionary new method of well intervention. The Wireline Drilling System (WDS) allows the operator to drill one or several short laterals out of an existing wellbore with wireline eliminating the need for a drilling rig. The system is designed to drill short (~100ft) laterals from an existing wellbore from both open and cased hole.

The WDS is comprised of a number of elements:

  • A small diameter polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bit
  • High power drilling unit provides fluid circulation and torque to turn the bit
  • Cuttings capture unit that separates and stores wellbore cuttings
  • SideWinder tractor to provide conveyance and drilling weight on bit (WOB)
  • Wireline unit at surface to provide power and control
